ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure's men's soccer team saw its season end with a 2-1 loss to George Mason on Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
George Mason took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Zach Herstek took a pass from Jannik Eckenrode at the18-yard line and beat Bonnies keeper Jeremy Figler with a low shot just inside the right post.
The Bonnies, who needed a win over the Patriots in order to remain in contention for one of the eight spots in the Atlantic 10 Championship, put steady pressure on George Mason but could not crack the defense.
On a cold day with intermitten rain and wet snow showers, field conditions deteriorated through the contest and both sides had difficulty connecting on passes or getting clean runs. The score remained 1-0 until George Mason's Colton Amidon broke one-on-one with a Bona defender in the 81st minute and drilled a hard low shot past Figler.
The Bonnies finally broke the shutout, but it came with just 22 seconds left. Garrett Pasono corralled the ball in just outside the box and lifted a shot over the arms of Mason keeper Steffan Kraus.
Figler made two saves while Kraus was credited with six as the Bonnies out-shot George Mason 17-6.
St. Bonaventure completed its season 2-5-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 8-9-2 overall. George Mason remained unbeaten in A-10 play at 5-0-3 and moved to 10-2-4 overall.
