The St. Bonaventure Men's Rugby traveled to Jersey City, New Jersey to kick off their season against the Pilgrims from New England College this past Saturday. Many members of the team got a chance to have their families come and support them, as well as many Bonaventure alumni coming from New York City to support the club. The support of the parents and alumni gave the neutral site game a home game feel for the players. That support led them to get their season off to a good start with a 32 – 7 win for the club.
The Bonnies had an offensive explosion late in the first half led by sophomore Francisco Herenu coming off the bench and getting their scoring started. Francisco led the team with four of the squads six tries and set the tone throughout the contest. Herenu was not the only one involved in the scoring, junior Matt Bergstol caught a beautiful cross kick from junior Captain Christian Artuso to put the game seemingly out of reach. The game was put securely out of reach by senior New Jersey native Matt Williams made himself feel right at home scoring a try late in the game, the try was punctuated by Junior Captain and Jersey City native Eammonn Matthews kicking the conversion.
Senior Matt Williams had this to say when asked about playing in his home state "it was great to be able to play at the collegiate level where I started playing rugby, and having my whole family and so many alumni at the game really gave me increased motivation to win."
The St. Bonaventure men's rugby team will try to make it 2 – 0 this Saturday as they travel to Pennsylvania to take on conference rival Kutztown. They look forward to seeing friends, family and alumni make the trip! The Bonnies have their home opener the following week on September 23rd against Penn State.
