Bonnies Tied Atop Leaderboard After Day One in Binghamton

APALACHIN, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University golf team stands in a tie atop the leaderboard after the first round of play Sunday at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational at The Links at Hiawatha Landing.

It was an up and down day for the Bonnies. The team appeared to have a three-shot lead as scores rolled in from the opening round, but the one-under 71 of senior Corey Long was disqualified due to Long signing an incorrect scorecard.

Despite that, the Bonnies still shot 295 (+7) as a team to tie with Saint Joseph's for the overall lead. Both the Bonnies and Hawks will enter Monday's final round two strokes ahead of both Lehigh and Monmouth (297) while fifth-place Villanova sits three shots back at 298. The opening round of play ended with a jumble on the leaderboard as the final round will begin with eight teams within five shots of the lead.

Freshman Danny Gianniny continued his impressive fall with an even-par 72 on the 7,104-yard layout Sunday afternoon to tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard. Gianniny carded three birdies on the day including at the par-5 18th to close out his round.

Junior Brent Morgan positioned himself in a tie for 11th with a one-over 73, also draining three birdies as well as one on his closing hole.

Sophomores Nolan Ditcher and Zach Chaddock each turned in scores of three-over 75.

The final pairings start at 9 a.m. Monday with Morgan the first to tee off for the Bonnies at 9:45 a.m. Zach Chaddock will start his final round at 9:54 while Gianniny will tee off at 10:03, Long at 10:12 and Ditcher at 10:21.

The Bonnies are working in defense of their title at the event a year ago when they posted their lowest team round in program history during the final day to take the win.
