After outstanding performances in St. Bonaventure's wins at Fordham and George Mason last week, senior shooting guard Matthew Wright was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Richmond guard Kendall Anthony.
Wright averaged 21 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists over the two games, leading the Bonnies in scoring in both road victories. The 6-foot-4 native of Toronto scored 18 points in a 76-65 win at Fordham Feb. 12. Wright followed that with 24 points – 19 of which he scored in the second half – in an 85-73 win over George Mason. Wright played the majority of the George Mason game after sustaining a cut below his right eye that later required two stitches.
Wright is the first St. Bonaventure player to win an A-10 Player of the Week award this season.
His 42-point week moved Wright within 71 points of 1,000 for his career, now with 929. For the season, Wright leads the Bonnies and ranks ninth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 15.7 points per game. He also leads the conference in free throw shooting percentage (.867) and ranks eight in three-point field goals (2.0 per game) and 11th in assists (3.2 per game).
St. Bonaventure, which is 15-10 overall and 5-6 in A-10 play, returns to action on Wednesday at home against Duquesne. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
