ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure men's basketball player Dion Wright was named Lakewood (Calif.) Youth Hall of Fame Co-Athlete of the Year in 2012 for his efforts in leading Mayfair High School to a CIF divisional championship.
In addition to leading Mayfair to the CIF title, Wright earned league MVP and CIF Player of the Year awards while averaging 19.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as a senior during the 2011-12 season.
There are six former Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame award winners who have played in the NBA, including fellow Mayfair graduate Josh Chrildress, Jason Kapono and Ed and Charles O'Bannon. Other winners include Olympic bronze medalist volleyball player Tee Williams and five-time Boston Marathon champion Jim Knaub.
As a freshman with the Bonnies, Wright played in 13 games and averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward had his best performances against Cornell, when he grabbed seven rebounds in an early season road victory, and against Charlotte, when he netted 15 points in another SBU win.
Wright was honored during a ceremony on Feb. 25 in Lakewood.
