ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The men's basketball team begins the 2011-12 campaign by welcoming Division II Mansfield University to the Reilly Center for an exhibition matchup Friday night at 7 p.m.
Friday will mark the fourth straight season that the Mountaineers have traveled to Bonaventure to give the Bonnies a dress rehearsal for the regular season. SBU posted an 82-62 victory over Mansfield at Bob Lanier Court last season.
Mansfield returns two of their five starters from last season's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East championship team that reached the NCAA Division II Tournament, eliminated by Bowie State in the first round of the Atlantic Regional.
Senior guard Josh Dupuy is the top returning scorer for Mansfield after averaging 7.3 points per game last season. The Virginia Union transfer also led the Mounties with 87 assists.
As for the Bonnies, one of the most anticipated seasons in school history begins with a preseason tilt. Andrew Nicholson, who has received a myriad of honors before stepping onto the court this season. The Preseason Wooden Award finalist was named to the 2011 Lute Olson Preseason All-American Team by CollegeInsider.com Thursday. The Mississauga, Ontario product and Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team All-Conference selection is one of the top returning scorers in the nation after averaging 20.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season.
St. Bonaventure returns four of five starters from last season's squad, including Nicholson, senior guard Michael Davenport, junior guard Demitrius Conger and redshirt senior forward Da'Quan Cook.
SBU hosts Cornell in its official season opener next Friday at 7 p.m.
