HARRISONBURG, Va. – Ben Contento struck out 11 batters in five innings of work as the St. Bonaventure pitching staff combined on a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory at James Madison Sunday afternoon.
Contento (1-0), who is coming off an injury that cost him all of last season, was outstanding from the get-go Sunday. He surrendered just one hit – a bunt single down the third base line in the second inning and struck out six out of the final seven batters he faced.
Roman Wild followed Contento with 3.2 innings of one hit ball, striking out three and walking none. With the tying run at second base in the ninth following a two-out double, Donovan Moffat earned the save by picking up the final out after retiring the only batter he faced.
With the outstanding work by Bonnies pitchers, the offense needed to do little work.
Mike Magnanti singled to center leading off the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Henshaw. Ryan MacCarrick followed with what turned out to be the game's winning hit just three batters into the afternoon as he cracked a single to left, bringing home Magnanti from second.
MacCarrick had an all-around performance – he went 4-for-4 at the plate and made a pair of tremendous defensive plays in right field.
Magnanti also collected two hits and got on base a third time by drawing a walk for a 2-for-3 afternoon.
The Bonnies are back in action Friday to begin a three-game series in Greensboro, N.C. at North Carolina A&T.
