Tim Kenney has been named Director of Athletics at St. Bonaventure University, President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., announced on March 10, 2015.

Kenney, 44, was the executive associate athletic director at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., since 2010.

“ I am truly humbled and excited to be given the opportunity to lead the St. Bonaventure athletic program,” Kenney said. “My family and I can’t wait to join the Bonnie Nation and work with the great coaches, staff and St. Bonaventure family to provide our student-athletes with the resources and support to compete in the classroom and in competition.”

“We’re thrilled to bring someone of Tim’s caliber on board,” said President Carney. “The experience he’s garnered in so many facets of Division I athletics is invaluable to us.”

In his current role at UMass, Kenney restructured the entire external operations of the athletics department to maximize resources and revenue generation, and secured the first $10 million gift in the history of the university for athletics. Under his guidance, revenue for the UMass Athletics Department is at an all-time high.

An All-American and Academic All-American swimmer at the University at Buffalo, Kenney played an integral role in the rebirth of the UMass men’s basketball program, including acting as lead planner for the university’s new basketball practice facility and overseeing the daily operations of the men’s basketball program. The Minutemen reached the NCAA Tournament last season.

“The athletics director search committee is excited that Tim has accepted the opportunity to join the St. Bonaventure team,” said Rick Trietley, vice president for Student Affairs and chair of the search committee. “Tim is a proven leader, fundraiser and athletics administrator with strong familiarity with the Atlantic 10.  We are confident that Tim will be a great fit for our university and all that we stand for.”

From 2004 to 2010, Kenney was associate athletic director for advancement at UMass.

Prior to his time at UMass, Kenney was at Stony Brook University from 1995 to 2004. He was assistant director of athletic development and an assistant men’s basketball coach (1995-96); assistant athletic director for external affairs (1997-2001); and director of alumni relations (2001-2004).

Kenney earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management and exercise science from UB in 1993, and a master’s degree in sports administration and physical education from Florida State.

Kenney and his wife, Maureen, a native of Grand Island, have three children: Sierra, 16, Jack 14, and Drew, 11.
